The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) , which develops networking standards, has worked in parallel with the Wi-Fi Alliance to expand the Wi-Fi 6 standard, available since 2019. As a result of this work and the agreements reached in mid-2020, the frequency band 6 GHz (5.925 – 7.125 GHz) has been licensed for Wi-Fi applications, and at the end of this year, the first device certificates were approved. Of course, devices must comply with certain transmission standards so as not to interfere with the licensed use of this band by fixed satellite and microwave services, CARS (Cable Television Relay Service) or BAS (Broadcast Auxiliary Services). The economic value of Wi-Fi solutions in 2021 is estimated at $3.3 trillion , with 4.2 trillion Wi-Fi enabled devices, 2.2 trillion Wi-Fi 6 devices and 338 million Wi-Fi 6E devices shipped annually . With over 500 million public hotspots, nearly 63% of mobile data traffic is carried over Wi-Fi. Approximately 16.4 trillion Wi-Fi-enabled devices are currently in use, with a total of 37.5 trillion devices shipped to date.

Generations of Wi-Fi according to the new nomenclature


Over the past few years, the pace of change in Wi-Fi standards has increased significantly, so the standards organization decided to simplify the notation so that users can easily understand what they are dealing with. Subsequent standards have been referred to as generations,

so the latest IEEE 802.11ax standard is number 6, Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6E, which brings the capabilities of the aforementioned standard from the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to the 6 GHz band, is actually an extension of Wi-Fi 6. Fi 6. In this way, devices that support a particular Wi-Fi standard receive the highest generation designation available, which usually ensures full backwards compatibility.

For greater simplicity, visual coding for each Wi-Fi generation has also been introduced. Manufacturers can use them on new products so that even those who are not fully versed in new technologies can easily compare different devices on Wi-Fi capabilities.

These solutions help to ensure optimal working conditions in virtual reality, e-learning or medical environments – key issues in times of pandemics, as well as communication in large crowds, applications requiring high bandwidth or based on the location of users
